Description
I chose to portray the grown-up Aang as he appears in The Legend of Korra for my third cosplay, which I wore to the 2012 Anime North and JCCC Halloween and Doujika Festival. It was the first costume I created entirely on my own, including the sewing, and while there are things I'd like to fix, I was pretty happy with the results. He was a good cosplay choice for me since not only is he a great character, but not having to bother with a wig and being able to grow my own beard simplified the makeup effort.
The red cloak was adapted from Simplicity pattern 9452 (“Cape B”) with a modified collar shape that I reinforced with interfacing to get it to stand up and a shortened overall cape length. The fabric I chose was a red Linen Look, which has the kind of rough weave texture that made me think of how an air nomad's clothes would look.
The tunic was reverse-engineered from my Karate gi and modified to be longer, more curved at the bottom, as well as longer in the sleeves. A golden-rod Linen Look was used here as well. I would have used a more intense yellow if I could have found it in that fabric, and will probably recreate this piece when and if I do.
The robe beneath the tunic was just a basic “skirt” I created entirely from scratch with an orange cotton material I found on sale with other “Halloween” colour fabrics. (I will probably also recreate this piece in a Linen Look fabric if I can find the right colour.)
For the pants I used McCalls's pattern 2586, also in red Linen Look, and modified it by blousing the ankle cuffs. The “shoes” and the ankle-length portion of the pant legs are actually one “boot cover” piece that I designed to be tucked under the actual pant legs and worn over my running shoes.
Finally, the arrow tattoos were applied by tracing an arrow template with a makeup pencil and filling in the shape with a blend of Rubie's white and navy cream makeup, then set with a dusting of talcum powder and a coating of Graftobian Make-up Setting Spray.
